Check out this illustration to get an idea of what you might like to have on hand.
3. How hard are these patterns?
All Betsy Ross patterns are designed to be simple and clear. If you can make a straight line with your sewing machine, you should have no problem with most of these patterns. Our "level of difficulty" rating system consists of three stars: one star is super easy- if you have no experience you should be fine! The two-star patterns are designed for people who have done a little sewing before. These patterns will generally take more time and might be a little more difficult. The three-star patterns aren't necessarily super hard, but they are for folks who've made a few garments before and know their way around a sewing machine pretty well.
4. Why aren't all of your patterns offered in "plus" sizes?
Almost all of our patterns are offered in larger sizes now- we just have a few more patterns to update.
5. What if I'm slightly larger on top than on bottom? Which "size" do I choose?
Let's use the Girlie Dress as an example. If you are are rather hippy but you're small on top, you can shoot for the small side because with the full skirt, you don't have to worry about your hips not fitting. On the other hand, if you are busty, you need to go with a larger size.
6. If I am just a littte bit larger than your largest size, can I just add a few inches all around the pattern when I'm cutting it out to make the garment bigger?
Yes and No. With simple designs like the A-Line Skirt, this might not be a problem, as long as you remember to also add some slack to the facing pieces as well. However, once you start making things with darts and pleats, it gets more complicated and it's easy to screw up. The proportions may be wrong once you start to toy with adding inches to the outside of the pattern. That said, just give it a try- it's fun to experiment, and you can always make a tester in muslin before you move on to your special fabric.
7. What kind of fabric should I use?
Each pattern package gives you tips on what kinds of fabric to look for. When in doubt, just try to think about the drape and shape of the garment. Obviously you aren't going to want to make a circle skirt out of denim, because you'll look like you're going to a square dance. Likewise, you won't want to make a tote bag out of silk, because it won't hold it's shape and it is too delicate for everyday use.
The great thing about Betsy Ross patterns is most of our designs look great in a range of fabrics.
8. Can I buy your patterns at craft fairs or retail stores?
